Return from Touba: Along the Backstreets of Rufisque & Pikine1

Ensnarled in traffic reentering the Dakar Peninsula, Bouba, our driver, took us on a circuitous route through the cities of Rufisque and Pikine.  It was quite the adventure, for me quite fun and refreshing, after a long day of touring Touba.  Scenes from the drive are available for viewing here:  clip1 clip2 clip3 clip4 clip5

Through a friend of A., we rented a taxi for the day and drove to Touba, the holy city of the Mouride Brotherhood.  We visited the home of Almamy's marabout, and had a long chat with a teacher/disciple about the tenets of Sufism, as it is practiced in Senegal.  We visited the mausoleum of Cheikh Ibra Fall and his family (photo4), and the library which contains the original writings of Cheikh Amadou Bamba (photo5).  And we toured the Grand Mosque of Touba, where Bamba and his family are buried (photos 7-12).

For a video tour of the Grand Mosque, see tour (from You Tube, not mine).
