Spring conferences at ISD are student-led. The conference is viewed as a business meeting with parents to discuss the kids' recent performance in class, supported by specific evidence, including work samples.
The purpose of this conference is several-fold: that students reflect on and assess their personal goals; that they assume greater responsibility and accountability for their performance in school; and that students and families together set new goals for the third and final trimester.
I posed two questions to students late last week, while they were planning and preparing for their conference: if you were a teacher, would you ask your students to lead their conference; and, if you were a parent, would you like to see your children conducting a conference of this type? The kids responded strongly in the affirmative to both questions.
