Prehistoric Senegal 2: The Fann & Madeleine Island

For the entire collection of artifacts photographed this day, see http://www.becauseoftime.org/ISD/ScenesDakar.html (gallery 28).

We continued our project with the UCAD Archaeology Lab on Saturday morning, the aim being to digitize their extensive prehistory collection, photographing a cross-section of artifacts by location.  We've begun with sites around the peninsula, moving from Cap Manual, to the Fann and Ile de Madeleine.  Note the map above for orientation.  For point of reference, we live in the Mermoz.

The artifacts from the Fann District, particularly along the coast, are old, dating to the paleolithic, upwards of 50,000 years old.

Randi and I were accompanied by ISD 6th graders Maisha and Will, and 9th grader Davy.  It's a rare opportunity for them to handle stone tools in this way.
