Peter Gostelow, Trans-African Cyclist, Visits ISD

Several months ago, ISD Director Wayne Rutherford shared that a British adventure cyclist, Peter Gostelow, had begun a trans-continental bike expedition from his home in the UK, through West Africa, to Capetown, South Africa. Several of us expressed interest in connecting with Peter, and having him visit with our classes when in Dakar.

After seven months on trail, having peddled through Europe and North Africa, Peter arrived in Dakar last week. Randi and I agreed to host his stay, offering him, for at least a few days, a break from the trail, with a comfortable bed, flush toilet, home cooked meals, and communication in English.

Peter is a soft-spoken guy, with a calm, deliberate manner, dispositions necessary for successfully negotiating his way through a multitude of languages and cultures.

This was not his first such trip. In August of 2005, Peter set off on a three-year, 50,000 km cycle from Japan to the UK. Described as the long ride home, this journey took him on a winding circuit through the countries of Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Tibet, China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Trkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and through Europe back to Dorset.

Peter met with the 6th graders for an hour last week, and shared slides of his 2005 cycle, and his current trip, being made in support of the Against Malaria Foundation.

His message was this: Live fully. Experience the beauty of this world -- it's fantastic variety of landscapes and cultures. Step out of your comfort zone.

Safe journeys , Peter.
